Sougia
Sougia is a two hour
journey from Chania, over unforgettable mountains to the south
coast. It is the site of
Syis, a port of the Roman Empire, of which any remains now lie
beneath the sea. Roman remains are however to be found at Lissos,
on a beautiful and memorable walk along the coast to the
west.
Today,
Sougia is a quiet village alongside a sweep of pebble beach
lined with tamarisk trees, a few tavernas, cafes, and small
shops. A daily ferry boat links the south coast villages and
twice a week it goes to the remote island of Gavdos.
This
seems to be a favourite spot for people who enjoy a simple lifestyle
and walking in the mountains.
